In the morning, depart from your convenient 44 at your hotel in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Set off on your tour through the bleak desert landscapes of the UAE after settling into the vehicle’s air-conditioned cabin with your driver-guide at the wheel. Near the rocky Hajar Mountains, high in the UAE-Oman border, is Hatta, a former trading settlement with a historic fort and rock pools. Watch as the landscape changes from broad plains to dunes and rocky mountain slopes before reaching Hatta Heritage Village after around two hours of driving. The complex is a reconstruction of a pre-20th century mountain village, with homes and structures made of stone, mud, palm leaves, and reeds, much as they were in the past.Go inside with your guide to see the modest homes, mosques, and watchtowers and view the displays of tools of war, handmade items, and traditional clothing that depict how people lived here up until the middle of the 20th century. Discover more about the area’s past by visiting Hatta Fort, and then get back in your 4WD to explore more of the desert. Continue to Jebel Maleihah, also known as Fossil Rock, after taking a stop to eat a packed lunch of a hamburger and Coke. The many old marine fossils that are lodged in the slopes of this substantial rocky outcrop, which rises sharply from the sands and bears the same name.Step outside to search for these swirling, eons-old fossils, which are the remains of small marine organisms and shells that once existed on the Arabian Peninsula’s ocean floor. Then proceed to the close-by Camel Rock. Take pictures of this iconic camel-shaped desert rock formation before heading back to Abu Dhabi, where your day excursion comes to a conclusion at your hotel.
